So, I've only just found out that the Harry Potter DVDs are going to be released in High Definition and that the old, normal, versions are being pulled from the shelves. Now I only own Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets, so I'm not totally annoyed about it, since I can get the whole lot on High Definition without buying them all again.

Although I hope that all the special features are still on them!

That's a bit of a bugger though for everyone without HD players and TV's, since you can't play them on a normal DVD player can you?

You're kidding?! I didn't know that! Well, that's a pain the arse! There's nothing wrong with my DVD player and I'm certainly not getting a new one!

After a little research (ie: Wikipedia) it says that there will be dual format DVDs, with both HD and normal versions on it so that they can be played on normal players.

But lots of stuff are still being released on normal DVD format.

The new HD DVD players will be backward compatible, which is some consolation, I suppose.

LG have just announced a player that will play CDs, DVDs, HD DVDs, and Blue-Ray disks (the rival to HD DVD). I suppose that they will be able to play VCDs as well, if you can hack into them. (Although VCDs are probably old hat now.) Apparently HP also said that they will support both Blue-Ray and HD DVD. *sigh* Why can't they just stick to one thing?!

The problem with the duel format (HD/Blu Ray) players is that those players will cost £400-600 normally, so you'll be talking of well over a grand for those ones probably.

Personally I'm staying well out of buying one until they sort it out. I remember the old VHS/Betamax issues of past, and I refuse to pay all that cash for something that may well end up junk. My old DVD player is fine. LOL

The other problem of course is that HD DVD's (with no normal version) won't play on your computer unless it has a HD drive, and a host of other upgrades to go with it. Pain. In. The. Arse. LOL

I'm with you totally! I'm definitely not going out and buying one! To be honest, because I'm getting so much from [livejournal.com profile] loriel_eris that she's downloaded, I'm not too bothered about DVDs at the moment. I do have a long list of DVDs that I want (Harry Potter being some of them) but I'm sure that you'll still be able to get hold of the DVD format for years to come!
