So, the discussion that [livejournal.com profile] chelle86, [livejournal.com profile] nimoloth and I are having about Diana Wynne Jones' books reminded me of another author (who I always get mixed up with DWJ) who's books I love: Diane Duane. She writes the Young Wizards series (which I originally thought was a trilogy and was delighted to discover not that long ago that there were in fact a lot more books). So I seek her out on the internet, and she's got her own fanfic writing project! How awesome is that?! She sets the scenario, writes the first few paragraphs, and then fans write the next ones, vote on which one is best and then it gets stuck on the end as the next part! The work becomes the copyright of Diane Duane, but she legally promises not to use it in any of her future books.

I think it's awesome that a well-established author is embracing fanfiction. Also, she has a weblog, where she keeps her fans up-to-date on the goings on in her world - like the prospect of a movie being made of So You Want to Be A Wizard?. *g*

ETC: I had to edit [livejournal.com profile] chelle86's name, because I accidentally put her down as [livejournal.com profile] chelle89, who also exists, and I apologise to both of them for getting them mixed up! *g*

(*cough* chelle86. I wouldn't bother pointing it out usually but the other one is actually someone else's LJ XD)

And wow, that really looks great, it's lovely to see an author actively take part in fandom that way. Do you have any links to where she's doing that?

And after our conversation I gave in and ordered The Dark Lord Of Derkholm XD I would have ordered The Year of the Griffin too but typically it's out of stock.

Grr! Am getting annoyed because this is the third time I've had to post this reply, because I keep messing up my html!

Anyway: Eek! Sorry. I keep putting '89' for some reason. I think that's the third time I've done it, only this is the only time I've not caught it! Must imprint '86' into my brain!

Diane Duane's 'Young Wizards' website is here I don't know what it is about The Year of the Griffin. It always seems to be really hard to get hold of.

A Sudden Wild Magic is even worse to get hold of, I can't find it anywhere!! :( Not even online *cries* and I really want it cause it's a sort of prequel to Deep Secret.

It's not even that old. It really makes you wonder what the world is coming to when really good books are difficult to find - unless the rest of the world has bought them all up!

True *nods*

I doubt it, alot of people I talk to have never even heard of Diana Wynne Jones, which is a pity I think, she's one of my favourite writers.

Hmm, I may have already asked you about this, but have you ever read The Winter of Enchantment by Victoria Walker?

No, you haven't asked me, and I haven't read it. I take it it's a good read? *g*

Have just searched amazon.co.uk for A Sudden Wild Magic and although they don't sell it, people are selling it through Amazon pretty cheaply. Try there.

Heh, I know that some of them do but they either a)don't ship to Malta or b)charge an arm and a leg for postage :S In fact it's cheaper for me to order from amazon.com!! I have no idea why. Play.com don't have it cause I had it on order for 3 months and then they emailed me that it's no available -_- I need to see if there are any good sellers on amazon.com, hmm.

It's a WONDERFUL read. It was out of print for 30 years and people were selling it on eBay for up to $1000!!! And I had a lovely paperback copy from when I was a kid with illustrations by the author herself and I love it sooo much. And now it's been reprinted :D And the sequel is going to be reprinted soon so I'll finally be able to read it! But seriously, it's a great read, Neil Gaiman has actually said he read it as a kid! He helped alot in getting them reprinted.

It does sound kind of familiar. I used to visit a second-hand book shop in Glasgow called 'Pulp Fiction' that specialised in fantasy, sci-fi, and country/western books (wasn't really interested in them!), and I've got quite a few older books that are out of print now from them. Unfortunately, the bookshop closed at the end of my first year at uni. [livejournal.com profile] kyizi and I were devastated!

I can't remember who wrote some of my favourites (they are currently in [livejournal.com profile] loriel_eris attic, otherwise I'd just look at them) and I can't remember their names offhand either, so searching the internet is no use whatsoever! *sigh* When I do find out what they're called, I'll let you know. They may still be in print somewhere, and they were really good!

Something i meant to ask you - have you read any of Trudi Canavan's books? They are actually quite good (in an easy-reading fantasy type way) :o)

Yes! Black Magician Trilogy is good (and is completely released) Age of Five is also good, but only the first 2 books are out - 3rd is due out in July according to Amazon.

The other author I have been reading recently is Alison Croggan. She writes the Pellinor Trilogy, which are kind of odd and I'm not entirely convinced it is a trilogy - being that the third book doesn't actually end the story.

*grins*

I'm a bad influence when it comes to books, still a bookworm you see ;o) I can usually devour 4-6 books a week on top of all my marking and other fun stuff.

Stop it! I've already got a pile of books to read, and I've ordered more!

I'm still a bookwork as well, but since [livejournal.com profile] loriel_eris has also given me a lot of tv series to watch, I get caught up in them too. *g*
