So, I got eaten by Borders tonight, along with [livejournal.com profile] loriel_eris. I used up my £30 of book tokens and in fact got just over £1 back ([livejournal.com profile] loriel_eris gave it to me, because she bought all the books together as she got a 15% discount.

What I bought was:

Dark Lord of Derkhelm by Diana Wynne Jones - this is a book that I've read more than once before and find it so funny. They didn't have the sequel, The Day of the Griffin, unfortunately, but I'll be on the lookout for it.

The Tough Guide to FantasyLand by Diana Wynne Jones - I've seen this book referenced a few times, generally in relation to Tamora Pierce stories (I was in fact looking for the new Tamora Pierce book that [livejournal.com profile] nimoloth was talking about, but they didn't have it), and since I'm a great fan of DW Jones, I thought I'd give it a go. I started on the train, and am finding it amusing already.

Temeraire by Naomi Novik - it's set in the Napoleanic War and is about a British Navy Captain and a dragon. Sounds interesting, will let you know.

Heroics for Beginners - by John Moore - it's another spoof/parody. It looks funny.

Battle of Everlight - Celia Dart-Thornton - it's the third part in a series (I was hoping it was a trilogy but I have a nasty feeling that it isn't) which I already own the first two (obviously), and is very good (the first 2, I can't speak for the third, because I haven't read it yet!). They're fantasy novels with a strong Celtic mythological influence, which makes them more interesting than a lot of the usual fantasy stuff out there.

I'll let you all know what I think of them once I'm finished. *g*

OMG!!!!!!

I LOVE The Tough Guide to Fantasyland! I was looking for it for ages and then found it in this bargain bookstore for a really good price, it was hidden in this ginormous box of books! Ooooh and I haven't read Dark Lord of Derkhelm yet, or its sequel, I've been on the lookout for them though! Have you read Deep Secret?? It's GREAT!!

And I've been considering buying Temeraire, let me know your opinion of it once you read it please! :D

Aaaand this hyperactiveness is the result every time someone posts about fantasy books XD

Dark Lord of Derkholm is so funny! And the sequel The Year of the Griffin is just as good, although for some reason a lot harder to find. I've only read it once, unfortunately. I haven't read Deep Secret but it's on my list to read! Have you read Hexwood? I remember trying to read and failing miserably for some reason.

I was so hyper last night, having bought lots of shiny new books, so I totally understand! *g*

I really need to buy them but I haven't been able to find them here yet. I guess I'll try online, play.com usually has her books. You'll love Deep Secret I'm sure, and it's also a semi-prequel to The Merlin Conspiracy (sort of in the same way Howl's Moving Castle is a semi-prequel to Castle in the Air, a couple of the same characters involved and the same multiverse).

Yes, I read it from the library and bought it for my collection, it did take me rather a while to get through it cause personally I think it's her most complicated novel, but once you get to the end and figure out what's happening, it's one of those wow moments, heh. Have you read Fire and Hemlock? I love that one :D And recently I bought Dogsbody and The Homeward Bounders, have yet to read them, and I got Archer's Goon to read it again, it was my first Diana Wynne Jones' book and I loved it :D

I don't think I've read any of them, although I've seen them on bookshelves plenty of times. I haven't seen Archer's Goon, though. And I think I may have read The Homeward Bounders or at least picked it up so many times that I feel as though I've read it!

I absolutely loved the Dalemark Quartet: The Cart and the Cwidder, The Spellcoats, Drowned Ammet, and The Crown of Dalemark. (The first three can be read in any order, just as long as the fourth one is read last.)

I think I'm going to have to search out the library and unearth some DWJ books! *g*

LJ didn't send me this comment -_- Good thing I came over to check lol.

I highly recommend Archer's Goon, it's one of her best stories, I remember I had read it really fast even though it's no shorter than her books usually are. The ending is such a surprise! XD

Oooh, I bought that off eBay! It was a real bargain, $16 for all 4 and they were practically brand new, plus it was this particular edition that if you lie them face up next to each other the covers form a map! I've read the first three and just have the last one left :D

Yay DWJ books! :D

Cool! It was a while ago when I read them, but I remember them being really different and interesting. Let me know what you think when you've read them all. :)

I love Diana Wynne Jones! Have you read Deep Secret? I think that's my favourite of hers. Archer's Goon is cool too - it was on CBBC when we were young.

Heeeeeee, it's my favourite of hers too! And Archer's Goon is a close second. I LOVE how you can never predict her endings :D

*g* That'd be awesome. Also, if I could borrow the new Tamora Pierce, I will be in your debt forever! Oh, and don't let me forget that I've still got your Lynyrd Skynyrd CD. I was going to give it to [livejournal.com profile] jenjemeer last Wednesday night to give back to you, but, as I said, Borders ate me! *g*

I'll need to have a look and see if I've got Deep Secret here or at home or if Laura still has it - I lent it to hear a little while back. You can certainly borrow Terrier - it's here. We'll need to arrange to meet sometime!

Definitely! I don't think I'll be coming into Glasgow next Wednesday, since my interview is on Thursday morning, but if I'm popping into Glasgow any other time, I'll let you know and then I'll swing by the uni. :)

They probably know that you can't come, anyway. *g*

I've ordered Deep Secret. *g* It should get here by the 23rd. *g* When it comes to books, I have no willpower!

No, I haven't read Deep Secret but since you're the second person in as many days to get excited about it, I think I'm going to have to find it! (It wasn't in Borders, otherwise I might have bought it.)
