I actually read over a chapter of The Two Towers with regard to turning it into a screenplay. The idea was that a group of us were going to go over each chapter in Lord of the Rings and write a screenplay of it without leaving anything out, and then time it. The idea was to see how long the film would be if it was filmed exactly as the book was written. (This was before the films were released.) I did The Riders of Rohan and it gave me a real appreciation for what the scriptwriters did and also the descriptive writing of Tolkien. I'd never read it as intensely as I did then.

I have a bad tendency to read books quite fast and gloss over bits. The good news is that when I reread a book, I find bits that I hadn't read before! I remember the last time I read The Hobbit I was shocked to discover that one of the dwarves, Dwalin, I think, had a blue beard! I'd read the book dozens of times before but had never noticed! *g*
